RE: Wide Format Day Wednesday
This is a picture of LTC retired John Piowaty. John Piowaty is a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel with 28 years of enlisted and commissioned service, including 102 missions over North Vietnam in the F-105. This was his 100 mission moustache. I had the honor of meeting him and he is a true hero. I will post a picture of John and I together tomorrow. During the Vietnam War pilots would grow a "Bulletproof" mustache or as some called it “Combat Stache” ; not only for the luck that it provided, but as a good natured protest against military regulations which strictly regulate facial hair, and the spending of time enforcing minor regulations that have little to do with winning the war. The 100 mission moustache was not just superstition to these pilots. They believed the moustache rendered the pilot bulletproof; shaving it off was tantamount to suicide. It seemed those pilots without moustaches or those who chose to shave theirs off were shot down or killed. It was all the proof they needed.

I sent in a request to to have this picture put in as a Clame inset to a picture of a wide angle shot of a group of us including LTC Piowaty on Wednesday. and viola, it immediately showed up today and overwrote Ted Nugent. So Im just going with it.

Chief Mcstache says:
On August 11, 1967, the F-105D Thunderchief flown by Capt. John Piowaty destroyed a span during the first raid on the Paul Doumer railroad and highway bridge (the principle northern entry into Hanoi), was badly damaged by anti-aircraft fire, and then landed safely at Udorn.
