A little story.
When I moved from Orlando to Jacksonville we were unable to sell our house. The market was just over saturated with short sales and foreclosures. So we opted to rent the property.
We hired a decent property manager and found a tenant rather quickly. All seemed to be going great. Then the tenant started to fall behind and eventually wasn't paying rent at all. We had no choice but to evict them. Total bummer of a situation.
We followed the letter of the law and they were served all the proper notices at the proper times and all the necessary paperwork was filed. Eventually the tenant came through with part of the money owed. Unfortunately since it wasn't the full amount we were unable to accept it or the eviction process would start over again.
Near the end of the process the tenant lawyered up and the case went before a judge. The tenant lied in court and said they weren't served any of the notices and that they paid the amount owed. Rather than look at the evidence and documentation the judge said because we accepted money from them that we were in the wrong. Totally infuriating.
So meanwhile we're paying the mortgage for the Orlando home, rent for our place in Jacksonville and tenant has continued to live in our house rent free since february.
So today we have traveled back to Orlando for our appeal. Tomorrow we will go before the same judge and ask for him to please look at the evidence. I'm going to plead our case and pray for a different outcome.
…and I plan to do it all with a moustache.
