Is there a story behind this?

Phil says:
Barbato Brothers was the farm run by my grandpa and his two brothers and one sister in Smithtown, NY. The photo is of the farm stand, Yellow Top Farms.

My grandpa knew, and likely was owed a favor by, the highway commissioner. When the brothers built their permanent stand, they got a great deal on highway-stripe yellow paint for the roof. Thus was born Yellow Top.

The lot that included the stand and parking lot is now occupied by a mattress store, a 7-eleven, and a Friendly's. The surrounding acres of farmland were replaced with luxury townhomes and McMansions.

My grandpa's sister, Florence, was known as Aunt Flory to everyone regardless of whether she was their aunt. She ran Yellow Top with a smile and an iron fist.

Two years ago, in May, Aunt Flory passed. She left my grandpa, the baby, as the last of the Barbato Brothers. I shot my final Moustache May photo that year in a hotel room on the day of her wake.

Last year, on May 22, my birthday, grandpa passed away, the end of his generation.

We celebrate our family history. But life goes on.

In hindsight, Moustache May has been a morbid time of year for me. But we're doing ok this year. Everyone hang on for a couple more days, ok?
