This is my brother, Kevin, and me. Kevin has had an incredibly difficult life--he was born missing fingers & toes and with no tear ducts; he had a really sever cleft palate that caused him all sorts of problems communicating; and he's had all sorts of problems with his skeletal growth so he was constantly in the hospital for surgeries when he was little, and he has no permanent teeth. Kevin has an IQ of around 60. And he was unlucky enough to be born to a useless father and a neglectful, abusive mother. From the time I was about 6 years old, I was the one who was responsible for raising him. I did my best, but I was a little kid, with my own problems, and I didn't know how to raise anyone else, let alone someone with as many troubles as Kevin had.

I've saved my brother so many times. I've gotten him out of jail. I've gotten him out of psychiatric hospitals. On various occasions, I've hunted through homeless shelters all over the state of Florida to find him. For a stretch when he was 18 and I was just barely keeping myself off the streets, I paid our father a hundred dollars a month to let Kevin live with him.

I found out a few weeks ago, that Kevin has been diagnosed with cancer, which is why I haven't been around very much this month. I spent the last week in Florida visiting with him and meeting with his social workers and his oncologist.

He has stage 4 lung cancer--his oncologist says it's the worst case of lung cancer she's seen in someone so young--and they're guessing he has a month or two, at most, to live.

Clame for a photo of Kevin and a bit of the story about getting him out of jail in 2007.

You're a great brother and a good friend. I'm really, really sorry to hear about the diagnosis. Our family is no stranger to the C-word either. It's never easy and it always sucks, but you've got the support of your fellow 'stachers here. If you ever need anything, don't hesitate to ask. Family is family, no matter what form it takes.

This is such a heartbreaking story. I feel awful. You've clearly always been the absolute best brother you could be and I'm sure that will not change in this incredibly difficult time. I really hope the very best for both of you during the next few months. I trust you will make the best of this situation and I hope that somehow, something positve can be born from it. We're all here for you brother.

David, we've talked about this some, but know I'm always here for you to talk more.

You are an amazing brother, and though Kevin was dealt a bad hand, it was always you that gave him any sort of normal life.

Stay strong my friend. We will talk elsewhere.

hi David, i'd been reading about this on twitter. your caption is intense. remember this for when you write your memoir some day:

"From the time I was about 6 years old, I was the one who was responsible for raising him. I did my best, but I was a little kid, with my own problems, and I didn't know how to raise anyone else, let alone someone with as many troubles as Kevin had."

Thanks everyone, for yor support. I feel a little lame for not having been a better participant during this final MM, but life just got in the way.

These facial growing romps, starting for me with Whiskerino 2005 have been really important for me. I've met some people that I now count among my closest friends and the creative challenge and opportunities for self-reflection have been simply amazing. Thank you all.

No reason to apologive for not being a better participant. Kevin needs you a lot more than we do. I hope that the remaining time that you have together is as good as it can possibly be. My thoughts and prayers are with both of you. You are a man amoung men and a saint my friend.

Oh man, don't apologize for any of this, you help Kevin and do what you need to do. I will pray for him and you, and I used to work at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and have seen people who are there alone. Kevin has you and that is the best thing in the world! Good Journey my friend, you have inspired me!
